Sustainability & Carbon Consultants

Carbon Managers is an independent UK sustainability and carbon consultancy. Since 2007 we have helped organisations — from small businesses to large employers — measure, reduce, offset and report their greenhouse gas emissions, in plain English and without the jargon.

We only advise on and deliver services we genuinely provide, so you leave with a plan you can actually act on — not a shelf report.

What our consultants do

Five connected services, all built on the same foundation: an accurate measurement of your emissions. Start with one and add others as your needs grow.

Carbon Reporting

Measure your Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions to the GHG Protocol, using the UK Government conversion factors updated every year, and turn the numbers into a clear, defensible report. Carbon footprinting sits inside this service — your footprint is the baseline everything else builds on.

Life Cycle Assessment

Understand the emissions of a specific product or service across its whole life — from raw materials to end of life — to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. What clients ask for when a customer, a tender or an eco-design decision needs product-level data.

Explore life cycle assessment

Carbon Audit

An independent check of emissions figures you (or a previous supplier) have already produced. We verify the numbers, test the boundary and methodology, and show you where the real reduction opportunities lie.

Carbon Offsetting Guidance

Once you have measured and reduced, we help you deal with residual emissions responsibly, working with specialist removal partners Klimate and Fenix Carbon. Guidance first — offsetting is the last step, never a shortcut.

Sustainability Advisory

Ongoing, independent advice as your priorities change — from shaping a reduction plan and answering customer questions to preparing for reporting frameworks. Practical support that fits your organisation, not a template.

Who we work with

We work with UK small and medium-sized businesses and larger organisations across sectors. Most come to us for one of three reasons.

A customer has asked for your carbon data

Larger buyers increasingly ask suppliers for emissions figures, a reduction target and sometimes a response to schemes such as CDP or EcoVadis. A clear Scope 1 and 2 footprint, with the most relevant Scope 3 categories, is usually enough to answer confidently.

You are bidding for contracts

Public-sector and NHS tenders increasingly expect a Carbon Reduction Plan, and every one of those rests on a credible carbon footprint. We build that footprint; we can also explain what a compliant plan needs so nothing takes you by surprise at tender stage.

You face reporting requirements

Whether it is SECR today or the new UK Sustainability Reporting Standards on the horizon, disclosure frameworks all rest on measured emissions. We help you get the numbers right first, so reporting becomes a formality rather than a scramble.

Whatever the trigger, the honest starting point is almost always the same: an accurate carbon footprint. Once you have that baseline, the rest — reduction, offsetting and disclosure — becomes far more straightforward. Our insights and guides explain the standards in plain English if you want to read up first.

How we work

A straightforward, five-step engagement designed to be light on your team's time.

1

Scoping call

A free, no-obligation conversation to understand your goals, what is driving the work and where your organisational boundary sits. You leave with a clear idea of scope and a fixed quote.

2

Data collection

We tell you exactly what we need — energy bills, fuel, business travel, waste and, where relevant, procurement data — and do the heavy lifting of turning it into a usable dataset.

3

Analysis

We apply the GHG Protocol and the current UK Government conversion factors (or ISO 14040/14044 methods for a life cycle assessment), then pinpoint the hotspots that matter most.

4

Reporting & recommendations

You receive a clear report you can share with customers, staff and buyers, plus practical, prioritised next steps for cutting emissions — not a wish list.

5

Ongoing support

We are here for the following year and beyond: re-measuring to track progress, helping you answer customer and tender questions, and widening scope as you are ready.

Why choose Carbon Managers

An honest, independent partner for the long haul — you can read more about our team and approach on our about page.

A track record since 2007

We have been measuring and reporting emissions for organisations for well over a decade — long before it was fashionable. That experience means fewer surprises and a smoother process.

Genuinely independent

We are consultants, not a software vendor. We have no platform to push and no products to upsell, so our advice is shaped by what your organisation actually needs.

Plain English, no jargon

Carbon accounting is full of acronyms. We translate it into language your whole team — and your customers — can understand, so the report is genuinely useful.

We only sell what we deliver

We are clear about the difference between what we carry out for you and what we can guide you through. You will never be sold a service we cannot stand behind.

What our clients say

Carbon Managers have been a trusted partner to Brunel Pension Partnership, bringing strong technical expertise and clear, actionable insight on carbon data metrics and reporting. Their collaborative approach and high-quality delivery strengthened our ability to account and disclose our emissions usage over the past four years, supporting the formulation and delivery of our Carbon Reduction Plans. We valued this partnership and would highly recommend their services.

Sustainability consultancy FAQs

Straight answers to the questions we are asked most often.

What does a sustainability consultant do?

A sustainability or carbon consultant helps an organisation understand and reduce its environmental impact — most often its greenhouse gas emissions. In practice that means measuring your carbon footprint to a recognised standard such as the GHG Protocol, working out where the emissions come from, recommending practical ways to cut them, and helping you report progress credibly. A good consultant is independent and tells you what you actually need, rather than selling a one-size-fits-all package.

There is no fixed price, because the work scales with your organisation. The main cost drivers are your size and complexity, how many emission sources and sites are involved, how much of Scope 3 (your wider value chain) you include, the quality of the data you already hold, and whether you need extras such as verification or a life cycle assessment. We give you a fixed quote after a short scoping call, so you know the cost before you commit.

It depends mainly on how quickly the data can be gathered. A straightforward organisational carbon footprint can often be completed in a few weeks once your energy, travel and waste records are to hand. A full product life cycle assessment usually takes longer — typically a few months — because collecting primary data across the supply chain takes time. We give you a realistic timeline at the scoping stage.

Yes. We have worked with organisations of every size since 2007, including small and medium-sized businesses taking their first steps. Many SMEs come to us because a customer has asked for carbon data, or because they want to bid for contracts, and a clear Scope 1 and 2 footprint is usually the right, proportionate place to start. We keep the process simple and the final report free of jargon.

For organisational carbon accounting we follow the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard and use the UK Government greenhouse gas conversion factors, which are updated every year. For product footprints and life cycle assessments we work to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, and to ISO 14067 for product carbon footprints. Where it is relevant we can explain how your footprint supports wider frameworks such as SECR, PPN 006 Carbon Reduction Plans or the UK Sustainability Reporting Standards — while being clear about what we do and do not deliver ourselves.

Not always to begin with. Scope 3 covers indirect emissions across your value chain — 15 categories under the GHG Protocol, and usually the largest and hardest part of a footprint to measure. Many organisations start with Scope 1 and 2, which they can measure directly, plus the Scope 3 categories that matter most to them, then widen coverage over time. We help you set a sensible, honest boundary for where your organisation is now.
