Those are indicative market rates we see across the industry — not fixed prices — because no standards body or regulator sets what an LCA should cost. The real figure for your product depends on how complex it is, how good your data is, where you draw the boundary and whether you need independent verification.

What are you actually paying for?

An LCA is mostly expert time. The method set out in ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 runs through four phases — goal and scope definition, inventory analysis, impact assessment and interpretation — and the bulk of the effort goes into the inventory: mapping every material and energy flow across the life cycle and attaching a reliable number to each one. Modelling software and background databases carry a licence cost, but the dominant line item is the consultant days spent collecting data, building the model, running the impact assessment and writing a report that stands up to scrutiny.

That is why the same headline deliverable — "an LCA of our product" — can cost £5,000 or £75,000. The scope, boundary and data underneath it are doing all the work.

What drives the cost of an LCA?

Scope: a carbon footprint or a full LCA?

The single biggest lever is how many environmental impacts you measure. A product carbon footprint (PCF) quantifies one impact — greenhouse gas emissions in kg CO2e — while a full LCA measures several, from climate change to water use, acidification and resource depletion. A PCF is essentially an LCA narrowed to climate change, so it is faster and cheaper to produce. If all you need is a carbon number for a customer or a tender, a PCF may be enough; if you want to make broader environmental claims, you need the wider study. System boundary: cradle-to-gate or cradle-to-grave?

Where you start and stop the assessment directly affects the workload. A cradle-to-gate study covers raw materials through to your factory gate; a cradle-to-grave study adds distribution, use and end-of-life — more life-cycle stages, more data, more modelling. Under the GHG Protocol Product Standard, final consumer products should be assessed cradle-to-grave, while a cradle-to-gate boundary is acceptable for intermediate products where the end use is unknown — provided you disclose and justify it. Data: how much can you measure yourself?

Data collection is usually the longest and most expensive part of an LCA. Primary data — metered energy, production records, bills of materials, supplier-specific figures — has to be gathered from your operations and your supply chain. Where you can't measure directly, we fill the gaps with secondary data from life cycle inventory databases such as ecoinvent, currently at version 3.12 with more than 26,000 datasets. The readier your own data, the fewer consultant days go into chasing it — so a company that already tracks its energy, materials and waste will typically pay less than one starting from a blank sheet.

Product complexity and variants

A product with three components and one supplier is quick to model; one with hundreds of parts, a deep multi-tier supply chain and several manufacturing sites is not. The number of variants matters too. Assessing a family of similar products together — rather than commissioning a separate study for each — spreads the fixed modelling cost and lowers the price per product, which is one of the most effective ways to keep a programme affordable.

Verification, critical review and EPDs

Anything that makes your results publishable or comparable adds cost. An ISO critical review — required by ISO 14044 for public comparative claims, and set out in ISO 14071:2024 — brings in independent reviewers. Publishing an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) adds third-party verification and programme-operator fees on top of the underlying study. These steps buy credibility, but you only need them for specific purposes, so it is worth being clear about whether you actually do before paying for them.

There is no official price list, so the figures below are triangulated from published industry cost guides and the rates we see in the UK market. Treat them as budgeting benchmarks, not quotes.

What about EPD costs specifically?

For construction products, an EPD is often the real goal, and its cost stacks up in parts. UK industry sources put a complete EPD at roughly £5,000–£25,000 all-in, with £8,000–£15,000 commonly quoted. Within that, third-party verification for a mid-complexity building product typically runs about €3,000–€7,000, and registering a first EPD with the International EPD System is around €1,000, with volume discounts and, depending on the operator, annual fees. Assessing a family of products together again reduces the cost per EPD.

How long does an LCA take?

Budget time as well as money. Industry experience — and ours since 2007 — is that a simple cradle-to-gate screening can be done in a few weeks, while a full consultant-led LCA more typically takes three to six months, with primary data collection consuming most of that time. Complex, multi-stakeholder cradle-to-grave studies, or those needing panel critical review or EPD verification, can run six to ten months. If you have a tender deadline, work back from it early.

Is an LCA worth the cost? The 2026 picture

The value of a defensible LCA has risen sharply. Since 6 April 2025, under the DMCC Act, the CMA can decide for itself that a business has broken consumer law and fine it up to 10% of global turnover — including for misleading environmental claims. The CMA's Green Claims Code already requires green claims to consider the full life cycle and to be backed by robust evidence. In that climate, "low carbon" or "carbon neutral" on a label without an ISO-conformant LCA or PCF behind it is a financial risk, not just a reputational one.

Demand is also structural. The London Plan requires whole life-cycle carbon assessments for schemes referable to the Mayor, and BREEAM credits, customer questionnaires and public-sector tenders increasingly ask for product-level carbon data. National embodied-carbon regulation is not here yet — in March 2026 the government declined to mandate whole-life carbon assessments for buildings, according to industry commentary on its response to the Environmental Audit Committee — but the market is not waiting for it.

One forward-looking note worth budgeting around: in February 2026 the GHG Protocol and ISO announced a joint working group to harmonise product-level GHG accounting, and ISO 14067 is being revised. A well-built LCA today, grounded in ISO 14040/14044, will carry forward — the underlying method is stable even as the reporting standards converge.

How to get the most value from your budget

A few practical levers keep costs proportionate:

  • Match scope to purpose. Don't pay for a full multi-impact LCA if a carbon footprint answers the question in front of you — and vice versa.
  • Get your data ready. Pull together bills of materials, energy and utility data, production volumes and key supplier contacts before kick-off.
  • Assess product families together rather than one study at a time.
  • Only buy verification or critical review when you'll use it — for a public EPD or a comparative claim, not for internal insight.
  • Start early so data collection isn't compressed against a deadline.
