Ethiopia CleanCook stoves
Traditional cooking stoves that burn wood and other unsustainable biomass have serious
associated environmental and health issues.
Not only are such crude devices inefficient and important greenhouse gas sources,
but indoor air pollution in the form of smoke, soot and disassociated free radicals
is the leading cause of premature death in children under five worldwide.
This project replaces wood and/or kerosene burning stoves with ethanol burning CleanCook
stoves and a reliable maintenance and fuel supply infrastructure is established.
This not only has significant CO2 emissions reductions implications but also significantly
improves indoor air quality and reduces the risk of accidental poisoning from kerosene
fuel.
This project passes additionality testing because the initial cost of purchasing
an ethanol stove is too high for most households to consider it an option. Overcoming
the initial costs enables families access to clean sustainable and affordable technology.
Renewable energy projects do not act as sinks and cannot store carbon. This means
there is no risk that carbon may be released at a later date.
