BlueSquare Becomes Green Square
17 March 2009
BlueSquare Data Managers Case Study
BlueSquare is a dynamic computer server hosting facility in the South East of England. Like the other participants in Carbon Manager’s Trees4Business campaign, Blue Square are acutely aware of how their data centres’ energy-use generates carbon emissions. That’s where the ‘Green Square’ comes in. This is their new programme which involves hardware and software solutions to reduce emissions, as well as planting 500 trees in the Alladale Wilderness Reserve in the Highlands of Scotland.
Malcolm Rooker, Group Managing Director, says, “BlueSquare Data are putting in a number of on-site initiatives to reduce our servers’ power consumption – such as ‘virtual servers’ which drive power-efficiencies of 40x - 50x and super-efficient cooling systems which generate cooling in a ratio of 3:1 over the power input. Additionally we recycle all packaging materials at our Maidenhead data centre and will follow suit in Milton Keynes once our new Tier 4 data centre opens there at the beginning of March.
However, these alone will not enable BlueSquare to achieve their ultimate aim of carbon-neutrality. The Carbon Managers Tree500 project has therefore been selected to help achieve this aim as a further off-site initiative.”
The staff response is very positive. Paul Ledger, the Client Technical Support Team Leader commented: “I think it is great that we are doing something positive outside of the energy-efficiency initiatives inside the data centres to help the environment. Customers I speak to are very enthusiastic when I explain it to them – and they are keen to find out more about the scheme.”
Alladale Wilderness Reserve is a pioneering ecology project north of Inverness, which is returning the area to its original wildness by adding native animals and plants. One hundred and twenty thousand trees have already been planted. The reforestation consists of species like Birch, Rowan, Willow on the river banks and Caledonian Pine on the hillsides. Animals returning include birds such as capercallie and ptarmigan, raptors like the kestrel, as well as deer, badgers, otters, wild boars and a pair of European elk.
Each tree at Alladale comes with its own certification and GPS coordinates, so that purchasers can be assured of its authenticity. One tree removes about 3/4 of a tonne of CO2 over its lifetime. By cooling the air and ground around them, the shade from trees helps cool the earth’s temperature. Trees are also responsible for stabilising our soil and preventing erosion.
About BlueSquare Data
BlueSquare Data operates data centres in Maidenhead and Milton Keynes, and provides dedicated or virtual servers through PoundHost Internet.
The BlueSquare data centres offer a colocation service – in that customers’ own servers can be securely and effectively hosted by them. There is a choice of options – full racks, secure cages, private suites, all fed by a managed uninterrupted power supply for 100% uptime, 24/7/365.
Customers also get the reassurance of qualified, professional, honest engineers, providing an effective ‘hands and eyes' service that enables remote technical issues to be quickly and effectively resolved.
Their Environmental Symbol
“At BlueSquare Data we have embodied our carbon-neutrality aim into a symbol which we’re calling ‘Green Square’. It represents our commitment to the environment and encompasses the various on-site and off-site initiatives we are undertaking at BlueSquare Data to help make our company greener, to reduce our carbon footprint and make us more carbon conscious. We believe the Carbon Managers Tree500 project is a vital part of the ‘Green Square’ initiative, as it gives us the best chance to reduce our carbon footprint off-site.” Matthew Munson, Group Technical Director.
